State Sen. Nina Turner, D-Cleveland, will discuss Ohio politics and her 2014 run for Ohio Secretary of State at the inaugural public event of the Akron Press Club on Sept. 12 at the University of Akron’s Martin Center. There will be the opportunity for questions following the speech. This event is co-sponsored with the University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.
Turner, the oldest of seven children, earned her associate’s degree from Cuyahoga Community College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cleveland State. She started her political career as an aide to then-state Sen. Rhine McLin and became executive assistant of legislative affairs in the administration of then-Mayor Michael White. Her first elected office was on Cleveland City Council. She later was selected by the Ohio Senate Democratic caucus to fulfill the unexpired term of Sen. Lance Mason. She won her first full term in 2010.
Turner championed voting rights throughout the state in the run up to the 2012 presidential election, and announced this summer she’ll take on Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted in the fall of 2014. She has criticized Husted for appealing court decisions that reinstated early voting the weekend before the election and for not challenging billboards in poor urban neighborhoods that she claimed were an attempt to suppress African-Americans from voting.
