Superintendent David James will discuss the state of Akron Public Schools at the Akron Press Club’s luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 13. There will be the opportunity for questions following the speech.
Akron schools passed a 7.9-mill levy in November 2012 and adopted a comprehensive deficit reduction plan. It also secured more than $9 million in Race to the Top funding to develop new curricula and instruction plans and practices.
The district has opened a STEM school specializing in science, technology, engineering and math. It signed a dual enrollment agreement with Stark State College and participates in the new University of Akron Innovation Generation Scholarship program.
James graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Cleveland State University. He joined the Akron school district in 1992, became executive director for business affairs 2002, and was named superintendent in August 2008.
He chairs the University Park Alliance and serves on the boards of United Way, Leadership Akron and the Ohio 8 Coalition of Superintendents.
He lives in Akron with his wife and his two children attend Akron Public Schools.
