University of Akron President Scott Scarborough will speak at the Akron Press Club on Wednesday, November 18. Lunch will be at 11:45 a. m., and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity of questions.
Dr. Scarborough became the 16th president of the University of Akron in July 2014.
His first year has been controversial as his administration implemented cuts to balance the university’s finances. Scarborough’s three-year plan calls for $40 million in cuts and $20 million in new revenue.
He also has undertaken a campaign to rebrand UA as “Ohio’s polytechnic university.”
Before coming to UA, Scarborough was provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Toledo. Before that he was executive vice president at DePaul University. He also has served as CEO of the Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Co., vice president for business affairs at the University of Texas at Tyler and an audit manager and interim director of Employee Group Insurance for The University of Texas System.
Scarborough earned a Ph.D. in strategic management from the University of Texas at Arlington, an MBA from The University of Texas at Tyler and a BBA in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin.
Scarborough lives in Akron with his wife and their daughter.

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events.
