Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy President Dr. Jay Gershen will speak at the Akron Press Club’s luncheon on Tuesday, April 19, at the University of Akron’s Martin Center. There will be the opportunity for questions following the speech.

Gershen was named to the NEOUCOM sixth president last fall and took office in January 2011. He replaced Dr. Lois Margaret Nora. Gershen is a dentist who previously was vice president of external relations at the University of Colorado-Denver.

One of his goals is to launch a scholarship program that would leave students debt-free upon graduation. In exchange for getting all their tuition covered from undergraduate studies through medical school, the new doctors would pledge to work in primary-care jobs in underserved urban or rural areas of Northeast Ohio

Gershen received a bachelor's degree in psychology from State University of New York at Buffalo; a dental degree from the University of Maryland; and doctorate in education from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Future Press Club speakers include Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Matthew McKenna on May 5. Check the Press Club’s web page, www.akronpressclub.org, for updates.
