The Akron Press Club is pleased to welcome Jacqueline A. Marino, professor of journalism at Kent State University, as its newest board member.

A seasoned journalist and educator, Marino has dedicated her career to storytelling and research, particularly focusing on the Rust Belt region. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, Belt Magazine, and the literary journal River Teeth, among other publications. She has also reported on rural health and the Mahoning River for Ideastream Public Media, earning Edward R. Murrow Awards for her coverage.

Marino is the author of White Coats: Three Journeys through an American Medical School (Kent State University Press, 2012), which won a 2013 Independent Publisher Book Award. She also co-edited Car Bombs to Cookie Tables: The Youngstown Anthology, a collection amplifying the voices of her hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. Her most recent edited work, The Art of Fact in the Digital Age: An Anthology of New Literary Journalism, was published by Bloomsbury Academic in 2024.

Beyond her journalistic writing, Marino researches the evolution of literary journalism in the digital age and teaches courses in reporting and feature writing, as well as podcasting and the business of media. She has mentored student journalists at Kent State’s award-winning magazines, The Burr, Fusion and A.

“As a journalist, I’ve always believed in the power of storytelling to inform and engage communities,” Marino said. “I’m honored to join the Akron Press Club Board and contribute to its mission of fostering meaningful conversations in Northeast Ohio.”

Marino holds a master’s in nonfiction writing at The Johns Hopkins University and bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from Kent State University.
