Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro will deliver her State of the County Speech at the John S. Knight Center on Wednesday, October 25. Doors open at 11:15 a.m. and the program will begin at noon. There will be the opportunity for questions following the speech. Ilene Shapiro became county executive in 2016 with the passing of Russ Pry, serving out his term. She was elected to the office in November, becoming Summit County’s first elected woman county executive and getting 59% of the vote. She is a former county council president who served on the council for more than nine years. She manages a budget of nearly $500 million that includes nine departments. She serves on the University of Akron Research Foundation Board and is a member of the Greater Akron Area ATHENA PowerLink governing body. Shapiro is co-founder of the Women’s Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation, and has served as past president of the Women’s Network. She is a former senior vice president of sales with FirstMerit Corp. and director of strategic alliances at the Summa Foundation. She also started a beauty supply business and owned a consulting business. Proceeds from this speech and other Press Club events fund scholarships for students of journalism and public relations.
