Superintendent David James will discuss the state of Akron Public Schools at the Akron Press Club’s luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 23. There will be the opportunity for questions following the speech.
As superintendent, James is responsible for 20,000 students and 3,000 employees. The district covers 62 square miles and includes more than 50 schools and community learning centers.
The school system is working to open the new Firestone/Litchfield Community Learning Center this fall. This will be the 31st new community learning center. It is part of the $800 million project to create new schools for students, their families and surrounding neighborhoods.
APS is expanding its popular dual enrollment program with Stark State College and is offering new educational choices with its College and Career Services program. The district also continues to offer students early college entrance testing (ACT) beginning in their junior year. This procedure gives students the option of taking the test twice if needed.
David James is a graduate of Cleveland John Adams High School and Cleveland State University, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees. He joined the Akron school district in 1992, became executive director for business affairs in 2002 and was named superintendent in August 2008.
