Journalist and author Hedrick Smith will speak at the Akron Press Club on Tuesday, April 7. Lunch will be at 11:45 a.m., and the program will follow. There will be opportunity for questions.
This event is co-sponsored with the University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.
Smith was a member of the New York Times team that won the 1971 Pulitzer Prize for its work on the Pentagon Papers. He won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1974 for stories from Russia and Eastern Europe.
Smith wrote the book “The Russians” based on his years as Times’ Moscow bureau chief from 1971-74. He also wrote “The Power Game: How Washington Works” and “Who Stole the American Dream?”
Smith has created 26 prime-time specials and mini-series for PBS since 1989. Two of his Frontline programs, “The Wall Street Fix” and “Can You Afford to Retire?” won Emmys.
Smith was born in Kilmacolm, Scotland. His journalism career began as a reporter for The Greenville (S.C.) News. After graduating from Williams College, doing graduate work as a Fulbright Scholar at Oxford University, and serving three years in the U.S. Air Force, Smith joined United Press International in 1959.
